# PolicyAssociation

`PolicyAssociation` is the atom of the association model: a policy number, the kind of association, and whether that policy is the parent of the relationship. It is immutable and deliberately small, which is what lets association sets be composed, filtered, and reasoned about without any further database access.

## Purpose

- Records one policy-to-policy relationship and its direction ([Resolve policy associations](../../operations/resolve-policy-associations.md)).
- Converts itself to the equivalent affiliate type for consumers working in that vocabulary ([BR-016](../../business-rules.md#br-016-manually-maintained-affiliations-are-distinguished-by-an-m-prefixed-code)).
