# clsAffiliatedPolicyCollection.Criteria

`clsAffiliatedPolicyCollection.Criteria` is the request object for an affiliation read. Alongside the policy number it carries the preferred association type, which is how a consumer asks for a specific kind of relationship rather than the default one.

## Purpose

- Identifies the policy and the relationship kind whose affiliates are being retrieved ([Retrieve affiliated policies](../../operations/retrieve-affiliated-policies.md)).
- Carries the preferred association type used when more than one relationship applies ([BR-015](../../business-rules.md#br-015-unrecognized-relationship-codes-are-classified-as-not-specified)).
